In August 1914 Ernest Shackleton and his crew of 27 other men sailed from England with the intention to become the first team of explorers to cross Antarctica from one side to the other. It was five months into their risky journey and they were still 100 miles from land . Their ship , Endurance became trapped in ice , The expedition lasted a further five months camping on ice floes. Soon continued by a perilous journey through stormy seas to find themselves upon the remote Elephant Island. Shackleton and five others navigated 800 miles of treacherous open ocean in a small boat to find a rescue ship .

Shipwreck at the bottom of the world was a great book and it vividly recreates an extraordinary adventure well known to history. The author tells the story through appreciation of the marvellous leadership skills of Ernest Shackleton, who brought home every member of his crew alive.
