Salt River is a book based on a true story. Tom Pook is a 14 year old boy who has 7 brothers and sisters. Tom is very responsible and left school really early to work on his father's farm because of this. Since the lack of learning at school, he can neither write nor read. When a big storm capsize a local families boat, Tom is part of the rescue team saving over 4 peoples lives. For his bravery Tom was offered a job at the age of 14 to leave home in Kaipara Harbour and be based in Wellington to sail on a ship. Tom's father is furious at him as he will be leaving his Dad's business. His mother and siblings don't want him to go because they will sincerely miss him. I loved this book so much and wish they could make it in to a movie. I give this book a 10/10 because it is the best book I've read yet.
