Book 2/20
Genre: War novel
War horse is about a horse sold into the war by his owner (Albert). Then in a charge against the Germans the horses and a unit of troops are captured. The horses are given to a small farm to help pull ambulance carts for the Germans. One day the German soldiers said that they needed more horses to pull the artillery carts for the war. After the English shelling, Joey saw an allied tank for the first time and ran in fear. While he was running he got stuck in barbed wire. Both the Allied soldiers and Central Power soldiers see the wounded Joey in no-man's-land, and an Allied soldier wins possession of Joey by flipping a coin with a Central Power soldier and winning. However, their few minutes of friendly peace create a bond between the two before they separate, and both wondered together what could have been if not for the war. Joey happens to be cared by a man named Albert. Albert realizes that Joey is his old horse after seeing what he looks like and how he responds to Albert's whistle. Albert and Joey return to England, where they live in peace.
I thought it was an awesome book. If you like war stories this is definitely one for you. I like how the author didn't do the book in a point of view of a soldier but rather a Horse stuck in the middle of the war. 9/10
This is a popular theme for Michael Morpurgo. You might enjoy Adolphus Tips which is also set during the war.
